Part 1: What If Everything You Know About Metabolism Is Wrong

Hey there! Let’s talk about something super important: metabolism. This post is part 1 of a 3 part series I'm working on. So let's get into this!

You’ve probably heard adults say things like, “My metabolism slowed down,” or “I just can’t lose weight anymore, it’s my metabolism!” But what if a big chunk of what we’ve all believed about metabolism is… just wrong?

In 2021, a huge international study published in Science (See link at the end of this paragraph)  shook up decades of assumptions about how our bodies burn energy and it turns out the truth is a lot more interesting, kinder, and way more useful than the old myths we’ve been told.

Let’s break it all down in clear, friendly language: myth vs. reality, so you can think about your body in a whole new way.

First: What Is Metabolism Anyway?

Metabolism is the name for all the chemical jobs your body does to turn food into energy:

  • breathing

  • thinking

  • walking

  • digesting

  • pretty much everything your body does, needs energy.

Think of your metabolism as your body’s energy engine. The faster or busier that engine is, the more calories you use, even when you’re just sitting still.

Myth #1: Your Metabolism Slows Down in Middle Age

  • What you probably believe: “Once I hit my 30s or 40s… boom, slow metabolism!”

  • The real science: Nope! From about ages 20 to 60, your metabolism stays pretty stable. It doesn’t suddenly slow down in your 30s or 40s just because of age. You may want to reread that linked article from Science I attached at the beginning of this.

That means middle-aged weight gain usually isn’t because your body magically starts burning fewer calories. Other things like how much you move, what you eat, how much muscle you have, and sleep or stress play a much bigger role.

Myth #2: Men and Women Have Different Metabolisms Because of Gender

  • What you probably believe: “Men burn calories faster than women, it’s just biology.”

  • The real science: Once scientists adjust for body size and composition, like how much muscle or fat someone has, there’s no meaningful difference in metabolic speed between men and women.

Often people think men have faster metabolisms because they tend to be bigger and have more muscle. But the engine itself? It works the same in both sexes.

Myth #3: You Can “Boost” Your Metabolism

  • What you probably believe: “If I drink green tea or eat spicy foods, my metabolism will skyrocket!”

  • The real science: Some foods can give a tiny, temporary bump in calorie burning, that’s called the thermic effect of food, but you can’t dramatically speed up your metabolism with a food hack.

Your metabolism has a kind of natural speed set by your body size, age, and composition, and it doesn’t shift wildly just because of one snack or herb.

Myth #4: Eating Very Little Makes You Lose More Weight

  • What people try: “Starve calories = fast weight loss.”

  • The real science: When you eat too few calories, your body goes into energy-saving mode and it tries to hold on to every bit of energy it can. That can actually slow down your calorie burn and make weight come back later.

Think of your metabolism like a campfire: if you starve it of wood (food), it doesn’t burn hotter it just dims. Steady fuel + healthy habits work better in the long run.

Myth #5: You Can “Trick” or “Shock” Your Metabolism

  • Tricky diets might promise: “Eat low-calorie one day, then high-calorie the next, that shocks your metabolism into burning more!”

  • The real science: Switching calories up doesn’t make your body burn more than its natural rate. It can prevent your body from settling into a lower-than-needed energy state, but it doesn’t magically increase how many calories you burn.

Your body isn’t fooled easily, it’s smart, steady, and predictable when you look at the big picture.

So What Is the Real Story?

Here’s what the research really found about metabolism over your whole life:

  • Metabolism is highest in infancy. Tiny babies burn calories fast because they’re growing like crazy, up to 50% faster than adults!

  • It slows down gradually until about age 20, as growth slows.

  • Then it stays pretty stable from ages 20 to 60, no dramatic decline just because of age.

  • Finally, after age 60, our energy needs do slowly decrease, about 0.7% per year on average.

And that slow drop late in life is a natural part of aging, not anything sudden or dramatic in your 30s or 40s.

What This Means for You

Instead of chasing quick tricks to “boost metabolism,” the best approach is simple and it works for kids, teens, and everyone in between:

  • Stay active every day

  • Build and maintain muscle through movement and strength work

  • Eat balanced meals that fuel your body

  • Get plenty of sleep

  • Drink water and take care of stress

Your metabolism isn’t your enemy, it’s actually pretty reliable. Knowing how it really works can free you from a lot of myths and give you control based on fact, not fear. If you’ve ever felt like your body was secretly out to get you, it’s not. Your metabolism is doing its job, and now you know how and why it works the way it does!

Let’s think smarter about our bodies, not harder.
