I can still hear my cardiologist’s words. I was stunned. “You have some plaque buildup in your
arteries, but no blockages. We want to prevent that. I am increasing your statin prescription
and strongly suggest that you adhere to the Mediterranean Diet”.


What is a Mediterranean Diet? For my entire life I adhered to the “See Food Diet”; I see it and
eat it. I am not overweight, I exercise often, my LDL was not too bad, I thought. But I decided
that I best listen to my doctor. As I began reading about the Mediterranean Diet my anxiety
increased, I didn’t dare eat anything. I lost all interest in eating and started losing weight. I
started reading the nutritional facts on everything I was eating but that did no good, I didn’t
know what was good or was bad.


That is when my son-in-law stepped to help. Dave is a certified nutrition coach and a great cook.
He explained what the nutritional facts meant and what to look for and look out for; what to
add to my meals and what to cut down on. He also provided more healthy alternatives to what I
was eating. He introduced me to many delicious meals and demonstrated how to prepare
them. He routinely has us over for dinner to try heart healthy meals to show it is not as difficult
to prepare as I presumed. He made my transition toward eating using the Mediterranean Diet a
manageable and enjoyable experience.
